March 9, 2008 - The Jewish Women’s Circle prepared for the upcoming holiday of Purim with a special “Mother-Daughter Hamantashin Baking Workshop” on Sunday, March 9. The program was held at the home of Rabbi Pesach and Chana Burston, directors of Chabad of Orange County. Over fifty mothers and daughters of all ages attended the exciting afternoon.
Various baking stations complete with ingredients and a gourmet recipe booklet were arranged for all participants. Chana Burston opened the afternoon by explaining why Hamantashin, three-cornered cookies with a filling inside, are the traditional Purim treat. “G‑d’s name does not appear in the Megillah; the chronicle read on Purim describing the events that led up to the Jewish people’s victory over their evil oppressor, Haman,” said Burston. “Just as one must look closely at the Hamantashin cookie to find the filling inside, we must recognize that although seemingly hidden, the victory of Purim was directly through G‑d’s hand. In our every day lives we must also look deep and see that G‑d is involved and provides us with constant blessings.”
As mothers and daughters enjoyed creating the Hamantashin dough, Chana offered tips on how to form the shape of the cookies and ideas of unique fillings and toppings. Special serving ideas were also presented, such as creating a “Hamantashin popsicle” cookie dipped into chocolate and sprinkles.
All enjoyed an ice-cream social with a delectable chocolate fountain. Afterward, mothers and daughters celebrated the Purim heroine, Queen Esther, by designing “royal” matching beaded bracelets.
“My girls and I were absolutely thrilled with the Mother-Daughter Hamantashin event,” says Abbie Gonzalez of Monroe, who attended with her daughters, Brianna and Adelina. “ It was a wonderful experience to have a day to spend with my two daughters creating such unique, edible treats to celebrate the upcoming Jewish holiday of Purim!!!!! We thank Rabbi Pesach and Chana Burston and all of the Chabad staff dedicated staff for providing this opportunity to meet other mothers and daughters in our Jewish community.”
