Jews from Around the County Enjoy Chanukah Super Bowl

Whether a bowler or not, everyone had a ball at the “Chanukah Super Bowl”.  Close to 100 men, women and children participated in Chabad of Orange County’s first family Chanukah party, held Sunday, Dec. 12th at Colonial Lanes in Chester.

The highlight of the evening was the grand lighting of the “Bowling Pin Menorah.”

“Chanukah has a message of unity,” said Rabbi Pesach Burston, after Mr. Jack Berkowitz and Dr. Seth Pulver lit the Menorah.  “There may be various ‘braches’ of Jews, like the many branches of the Menorah.   But they are all part of one Menorah.  We are all one people!”

“Tonight’s program exemplifies this,” the rabbi added.  In the party room, where the menorah lighting was held, there were Jews from all over the county.  Jews who considered themselves Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, non-affiliated, and even a few Chassidim from Kiryas Joel, all took part in this unique event – together. As the Bowling pins glowed with their warm light, everyone sang traditional songs in unison.

The program accommodated exciting activities for the entire family.  While bowling to lively music, educational Chanukah videos filled the lane’s screens, and family driedel games further increased the holiday spirit.

The festive party room was filled with booths of creative arts and crafts and other special activities, such as “decorating your own doughnut”.   A delicious Chanukah dinner and array of Chanukah treats and desserts was available for all to enjoy.

Chana Burston, the Rabbi’s wife, an experienced educator and teacher, led all of the participating children in a group dreidel game.  Each child was granted a turn to spin the dreidel and answer a Chanukah question, and every player had a chance to receive an exciting grab bag prize.

Chabad’s approach is to share the light and beauty of the Jewish heritage with every Jew.  The dancing flames of the bowling pin Menorah serves as a reminder that the spirit of Judaism can be incorporated into every aspect of life, including bowling.  Celebrating traditions in a fun and creative style adds an exciting dimension to Chanukah and increases the joy of the holiday.

Lag B’omer Bonfire & BBQ

The Art of Love:

Relationships in the Kabbalah

The warm bonfire reflected its radiance upon the glimmering evening lake.  Glowing torches surrounded the lovely yard.  Close to one-hundred adults and teens experienced an enriching evening celebrating the Jewish holiday of Lag B’omer.   Participants enjoyed a freshly grilled BBQ dinner and sat at candlelit tables, laden with roses and wine.

The event was organized by Chabad of Orange County, directed by Rabbi Pesach and Chana Burston, and was held behind the lake front home of Dr. Bob and Iris Sandow in Highland Mills.

The evening continued around the large bon-fire.  With cozy blankets and high spirits, Jews of varied affiliations and backgrounds united to celebrate this unique holiday.   After welcoming everyone, Rabbi Pesach Burston introduced Rabbi Yossi Jacobson, a famous lecturer and scholar.    With humorous and touching stories and insights, Rabbi Jacobson spoke about “The Art of Love: Relationships in the Kabbalah.”  Throughout the lecture, Jacobson led the group in singing vibrant Jewish melodies, accompanied by guitar, mandolin, drums and other instruments.  The energy was strong as joyful singing and meaningful discussion continued late into the night.

One participant asked Mrs. Chana Burston how he could capture the inspiration of the evening, and allow the bon-fire to burn forever inside his heart.  “We need to work as a community to create more events which promote Jewish unity and love for our heritage,” answered Chana.  “We should each take a spark from the fire and ignite our personal fire, the soul within each of us.  Increasing in good deeds keeps our internal fire aglow.”

A very special thank you to all those who made the event possible:  The Sandow Family, The Zelnko Family, The Pinkus Family, Lori Glatt, David Dixler, Mitch Wenzell, Lenny Silver, Harry Sweet, Jeff Kaplan, Zalman Belkin, Rabbi Yossi Jacobson, The Mizrachi Family, Tzvi Burston and all those who wished to remain anonymous.

Feedback

“Last evening's Lag B'omer BBQ was beyond amazing:  inspiring, humorous, spiritual, and motivating . . to be all we can be to those we love and to those whose lives we touch upon.  Gil and I came away from the event significantly moved and feeling blessed and privileged to have shared the evening's experience.  "Thank you" doesn't even come close to expressing our gratitude to you two, special, unique emissaries of Yiddishkeit.  May you continue to carry out your mission in good health and joy with the blessings of Hashem for decades and decades.”
